If you go the Fuji route, I wouldn't recommend anything too new or expensive. The Fuji bodies also have lots of physical dials etc so they handle a little more like a film SLR.

And if you're used to film photography, you might be able to find some settings that get you close to that kind of look without having to delve into editing unless you want to. Not ideal as you won't be using 100% of what the lens has to offer but it will allow you to play around with the film simulations which are a lot of fun. Having said all that, if you can't find something full frame in good condition that fits your budget, I'd recommend a Fuji with an aps-c sensor.
Take note of the NEED part there though, it doesn't mean you won't WANT to buy modern glass in the future. Also, as you'll have an abundance of lenses available, you won't need to set aside a portion of your budget for glass, you'll already have have it. Want to echo what's already been said here, full frame if you can to make the most of the fact that those lenses were made to cover 35mm, may as well see as much of the character of those lenses. You may have a harder time locating the adapters you are looking for. I don't know enough about Nikon digital mirrorless cameras to speak on them, but I would guess the same is true about Fuji. I'm not the biggest fan of Fuji, and you may find that there are less adapters available for that system. A great, and flexible setup.Īs was mentioned, basically any lens mount will have an adapter for the Sony E mount, and I've bought some very odd mount adapters, with none of them costing more than $20.Īlso mentioned, I would avoid M43 cameras, as they will not allow your lenses to really shine as they were designed.

The Nikon manual focus lenses are wonderful on both cameras. I keep it in my daily carry bag, with one of my Nikon 35mm cameras, an adapter, and a few lenses. If you're ok with a used camera, you can probably get one for $500 or less.
It's also available for a steal! Brand new, it's well under $1k with a kit lens, and cheaper if you don't want the (extremely underwhelming) kit lens. It's really made to adapt lenses with ease.

There is a great focus aid which magnifies the image when you're manually focusing, plus it has the standard focus peaking and everything else. It's got a beautiful full frame sensor on it, and it's an all around wonderful camera. If you are using this camera mainly for vintage lenses, this is what you're looking for. I've been shooting film for 20+ years and my collection of manual focus lenses transfer seamlessly to my Sony A7II.
